If you’re waking up with numbness in your hand(s), find difficulty grasping objects due to weakness or stiffness, and have pain in the palm side of your wrists (often with a shooting quality), you may be suffering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This is caused by swelling in the sheathes of the tendons that tighten your fist and often is caused by overuse at work or in the garden.
Treatment is usually successful if started early, and involves using a wrist brace to rest the tendons, massage and ultrasound to reduce swelling and spasm, and a stretching & strengthening program of exercise. Speak to your physiotherapist if you’re concerned.
